Diphthongs: /aʊ/ by Solomon Osuokam Ogbeh

Introduction to Diphthongs

Diphthongs are complex vowel sounds that begin with one vowel sound and glide into another within the same syllable. They are essential in the English language as they contribute to the pronunciation and meaning of words. In this lesson, we will focus on the diphthong /aʊ/, which is found in many common English words.

The /aʊ/ diphthong starts with an open front unrounded vowel /a/ and glides towards a close back rounded vowel /ʊ/. This combination can be heard in words like "house" and "cow".

Pronunciation Guide

To produce the /aʊ/ sound:

  1. Start with your mouth open wide, as if saying the vowel sound in "cat" (/a/).
  2. Glide your tongue upwards and slightly back, rounding your lips, as if transitioning into the vowel sound in "put" (/ʊ/).
  3. Practise by slowly moving from /a/ to /ʊ/ to get a smooth transition.
