Numerical Pronouns by Solomon Osuokam Ogbeh

Numerical pronouns are an essential part of the English language, often used to refer to specific quantities of nouns without repeating the nouns themselves. These pronouns help in making sentences concise and avoiding redundancy. In this lesson, we will explore the concept of numerical pronouns, their types, usage, and provide practical examples to ensure a clear understanding.

Definition and Importance

Numerical pronouns are pronouns that indicate specific quantities or numbers of people or things. They are particularly useful in both spoken and written English to avoid repetition and to make communication more efficient. Understanding numerical pronouns is crucial for mastering English, as it enhances both comprehension and expression.

Types of Numerical Pronouns

Numerical pronouns can be categorised into several types based on how they refer to numbers or quantities:

  1. Cardinal Numerical Pronouns
  2. Ordinal Numerical Pronouns
  3. Fractional Numerical Pronouns
1. Cardinal Numerical Pronouns

Cardinal numerical pronouns refer to exact numbers. They answer the question "How many?" and are used to specify an exact count of nouns. Examples include one, two, three, four, etc.

Examples:

  • Singular: "Ade has one apple. He will eat one."
  • Plural: "There are five students in the class. Four are boys and one is a girl."
2. Ordinal Numerical Pronouns

Ordinal numerical pronouns indicate the position or order of nouns in a sequence. They answer the question "Which one?" and are used to specify the rank or position of nouns. Examples include first, second, third, fourth, etc.

Examples:

  • "Chinelo was the first to arrive at the meeting. She always aims to be first."
  • "Uche is the second child in his family. He feels proud to be second."
3. Fractional Numerical Pronouns

Fractional numerical pronouns refer to parts of a whole. They indicate a fraction or part of a noun. Examples include half, third, quarter, etc.

Examples:

  • "Nkem drank half of the juice. She offered the other half to her friend."
  • "The project is three-quarters complete. We need to finish the remaining quarter by next week."

Usage of Numerical Pronouns

Numerical pronouns can be used in various grammatical structures, including:

  1. Subject of a Sentence
  2. Object of a Sentence
  3. Possessive Form
1. Subject of a Sentence

Numerical pronouns can act as the subject of a sentence, specifying how many people or things are performing the action.

Examples:

  • "Three attended the workshop. Two found it very informative."
  • "One is enough to start the process. We don't need more."
2. Object of a Sentence

Numerical pronouns can also function as the object of a sentence, indicating how many people or things are affected by the action.

Examples:

  • "She invited five to her birthday party. Only three could make it."
  • "I bought six apples. I gave two to my neighbour, Nkechi."
3. Possessive Form

Although less common, numerical pronouns can sometimes indicate possession, especially in informal speech.

Examples:

  • "That is two's responsibility. They should handle it."
  • "These three's opinions matter the most in the decision-making process."

Practice Exercises

To solidify your understanding of numerical pronouns, try the following exercises:

1.     Rewrite the sentences by replacing the underlined nouns with appropriate numerical pronouns:

a)      Adamu picked up three books from the library.

b)      Out of all the participants, Ngozi and Tunde were the best.

2.     Use numerical pronouns to complete the sentences:

a)      "There were ten students in the group. __________ were absent."

b)      "Chiamaka bought a dozen oranges. She ate half and gave ______ to her brother."

3.     Identify and correct the errors in the use of numerical pronouns:

b)      "They finished first and second in the race. They were proud of their achievements."

Homework Assignment

Write a short paragraph about a recent event or activity you participated in, ensuring to include at least three different numerical pronouns.

Numerical pronouns are vital for effective communication, providing clarity and brevity in both spoken and written English. By understanding and correctly using cardinal, ordinal, and fractional numerical pronouns, students can enhance their language skills significantly. Practice and regular usage will ensure proficiency in using numerical pronouns accurately. By mastering numerical pronouns, you will improve your ability to communicate quantities and orders efficiently, making your language both precise and engaging.
