Golf Vocabulary by Solomon Osuokam Ogbeh

1.     Ace: A hole-in-one, when the ball is hit directly from the tee into the hole.
Example: Ade got his first ace on the par-3 8th hole.

2.     Approach: A shot intended to land the ball on the green.
Example: Tunde's approach shot landed perfectly on the green.

3.     Back nine: The last nine holes of an 18-hole golf course.
Example: Chidi performed better on the back nine than the front nine.

4.     Backspin: A backward spin on the ball causing it to stop quickly or spin back upon landing.
Example: Kemi's shot had enough backspin to stop near the hole.

5.     Birdie: One stroke under par on a hole.
Example: Bola celebrated her birdie on the 7th hole.

6.     Bogey: One stroke over par on a hole.
Example: Despite a bogey on the 5th hole, Funmi remained focused.

7.     Bunker: A sand trap on the course.
Example: Samuel struggled to get his ball out of the bunker.

8.     Caddie: A person who carries a golfer's clubs and offers advice.
Example: Ayo's caddie suggested using a 7-iron for the next shot.

9.     Chip: A short shot typically made from near the green.
Example: Fatima's chip shot got her close to the pin.

10.  Club: A tool used to hit the golf ball.
Example: David chose a driver to tee off.

11.  Clubhouse: The main building where golfers can relax and socialise.
Example: After the round, they met in the clubhouse for lunch.

12.  Course: The area where golf is played, consisting of 18 holes.
Example: The new golf course in Abuja is challenging.

13.  Divot: A piece of turf removed when hitting a shot.
Example: Chika replaced the divot after her shot.

14.  Dogleg: A hole where the fairway bends to the left or right.
Example: The 12th hole has a sharp dogleg to the right.

15.  Double bogey: Two strokes over par on a hole.
Example: Seyi was disappointed with his double bogey on the 3rd hole.

16.  Drive: A long shot typically made from the tee.
Example: Femi's drive went over 250 yards.

17.  Eagle: Two strokes under par on a hole.
Example: An eagle on the 15th hole put Mariam in the lead.

18.  Fairway: The well-maintained grass area between the tee and the green.

19.  Flagstick: A pole with a flag indicating the hole's location.

20.  Fore: A warning shout when a ball is heading towards someone.
Example: Sola shouted "Fore!" as his ball veered off course.

21.  Front nine: The first nine holes of an 18-hole golf course.
Example: Ada played exceptionally well on the front nine.

22.  Green: The area of short grass surrounding the hole.
Example: Chinedu's putt on the green was smooth and accurate.

23.  Grip: How a golfer holds the club.
Example: A firm grip is essential for a powerful swing.

24.  Handicap: A numerical measure of a golfer's ability.

25.  Hazard: Any obstacle on the course, such as water or sand.

27.  Honour: The right to tee off first, determined by the previous hole's score.

28.  Hook: A shot that curves sharply to the left (for a right-handed golfer).

29.  Iron: A type of club used for various shots, numbered 1 to 9.

30.  Lie: The position of the ball when it comes to rest.

31.  Links: A type of golf course typically near the coast with sandy soil and few trees.

32.  Marker: A small object used to mark the ball's position on the green.

33.  Match play: A scoring system where players compete hole-by-hole.

34.  Mulligan: An unofficial do-over shot.

35.  Out of bounds: An area outside the course where play is not allowed.

36.  Par: The standard number of strokes set for a hole.
Example: The par for the course is 72.

37.  Penalty stroke: An extra stroke added to a player's score for a rule violation.

38.  PGA: Professional Golfers' Association, an organisation for professional golfers.

39.  Pin: Another term for the flagstick.
Example: The pin placement today is quite challenging.

40.  Pitch: A short, high shot to the green.
Example: Tolu's pitch shot stopped just inches from the hole.

41.  Putter: A club used for rolling the ball on the green.
Example: Using a putter, Nneka sank a 10-foot putt.

42.  Rough: The longer grass area bordering the fairway.

57.  Triple bogey: Three strokes over par on a hole.

58.  Wedge: A type of club used for short, high shots.

59.  Wood: A type of club used for long-distance shots.

60.  Yardage: The distance to the hole measured in yards.
