Political Party Vocabulary by Solomon Osuokam Ogbeh

1.    Act - A formal law or decision passed by a legislative body.

o   Example: The National Assembly enacted an act to reform the education system.

2.    Amendment - A formal change or addition to a law or constitution.

o   Example: The amendment to the constitution was proposed to strengthen democratic practices.

3.    Ballot - A method of voting, usually by marking a paper or electronic form.

o   Example: Aminat cast her ballot for the local council elections in Lagos.

4.    Campaign - Organised activities to promote a candidate or policy.

o   Example: The campaign in Enugu included rallies and door-to-door canvassing.

5.    Candidate - A person who runs for a political office.

o   Example: Idris is the candidate for the Labour Party in the upcoming gubernatorial election.

6.    Constitution - The fundamental principles or established precedents by which a state is governed.

o   Example: The Nigerian Constitution outlines the structure of government and the rights of citizens.

7.    Convention - A large meeting of a political party to decide on policies or candidates.

o   Example: The convention in Abuja was attended by delegates from across the country.

8.    Electorate - The group of people eligible to vote in elections.

o   Example: The electorate in Kaduna has been active in the recent elections.

9.    Endorsement - Official support for a candidate or policy.

o   Example: The endorsement from prominent leaders boosted Bola’s campaign.

10. Faction - A subgroup within a larger political group, often with differing views.

o   Example: The party faced internal strife due to a faction disagreement on policy issues.

11. Fundraising - The process of collecting money to support a campaign or party.

o   Example: The party organised a fundraising event in Abuja to support their electoral bid.

12. Governance - The act of governing or administering a country or organisation.

o   Example: Effective governance is crucial for economic stability and public welfare.

13. Incumbent - The current holder of a political office.

o   Example: The incumbent president is running for re-election.

14. Ideology - A system of ideas and ideals that form the basis of political theory and policy.

o   Example: The party’s ideology emphasises economic reform and social equality.

15. Independent - A candidate or official not affiliated with any political party.

o   Example: Chukwuma ran as an independent candidate in the state elections.

16. Legislation - Laws or rules proposed or enacted by a governing body.

o   Example: The new legislation aims to improve public health and safety standards.

17. Lobbying - Efforts to influence decisions made by government officials or legislators.

o   Example: The environmental group engaged in lobbying to influence climate change policies.

18. Majority - The greater part or number; more than half of the total.

o   Example: The party won a majority of seats in the legislative assembly.

19. Manifesto - A public declaration of the party’s policies and aims.

o   Example: The party’s manifesto outlines their plans for economic development and healthcare.

20. Opposition - Political parties or groups that are not in power and challenge the government.

o   Example: The opposition party has been critical of the government’s handling of economic issues.

21. Party Leader - The head or leading figure of a political party.

o   Example: The party leader, Nnenna, delivered a speech at the national convention.

22. Platform - The set of policies or principles a party advocates.

o   Example: The party’s platform includes education reform and anti-corruption measures.

23. Primary - An election to select a party’s candidate for a general election.

24. Proposal - A suggestion or plan put forward for discussion or approval.

25. Reform - Changes intended to improve a political or social system.

26. Representative - An elected official who represents the interests of constituents.

27. Secretary - The person responsible for administrative duties within a party.

28. Senator - A member of the upper house of a legislature.
