Summary Writing by Solomon Osuokam Ogbeh

Summary writing is a critical skill for students. It involves distilling the essence of a longer text into a concise form, capturing its main ideas without the detailed descriptions or supplementary information. This skill is not only crucial for academic success but also for effective communication in various professional contexts. In this chapter, we will explore the principles of summary writing, techniques for crafting effective summaries, and practice exercises to hone your skills.

What is a Summary?

A summary is a brief statement or account that presents the main points of a longer text. It is much shorter than the original material, focusing on the core ideas and essential information. Summaries can be written for a range of texts, including articles, essays, stories, and reports.

The purpose of a summary is to:

  • Convey the central ideas of the original text.
  • Provide a concise overview without unnecessary details.
  • Allow readers to grasp the main points quickly.

Key Characteristics of a Good Summary

  1. Conciseness: A summary should be brief, including only the essential information. Avoid adding unnecessary details or examples.
  2. Clarity: The summary must be clear and easy to understand. Use straightforward language and avoid ambiguity.
  3. Accuracy: Ensure that the summary accurately reflects the content and meaning of the original text. Misrepresenting the text can lead to misunderstandings.
  4. Objectivity: A summary should be neutral and factual. Avoid inserting personal opinions or interpretations.
  5. Coherence: The summary should flow logically, with ideas presented in a clear and organised manner.

Steps for Writing a Summary

1.     Read the Original Text Carefully:

    • Begin by reading the text thoroughly to understand its overall meaning and structure. Pay attention to the main ideas and key details.
    • For instance, if you are summarising a news article about Nigerian politics, focus on understanding the main events and implications discussed.

2.     Identify the Main Ideas:

    • Determine the main points and arguments of the text. Look for thesis statements, topic sentences, and concluding remarks.
    • In a narrative text, like Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart," identify the central themes, such as cultural conflict and personal tragedy.

3.     Take Notes:

    • Jot down the key ideas and important details as you read. This will help you keep track of the main points and ensure nothing is missed.

4.     Organise the Main Points:

    • Arrange the main ideas in a logical order. This might involve grouping related points together or following the sequence of the original text.

5.     Write the Summary:

    • Begin with a brief introduction to the text, including the title, author, and main purpose.
    • Present the main points in your own words, avoiding direct quotations unless they are particularly significant.
    • Conclude with a sentence that encapsulates the overall significance of the text.

6.     Revise and Edit:

    • Review your summary for clarity, accuracy, and coherence. Check for grammatical errors and ensure that the summary is concise and to the point.

Example of Summary Writing

Let's consider an example of summarising a fictional article on a Nigerian environmental issue:

Original Text Excerpt: "Recent studies have highlighted the severe impact of deforestation in the Niger Delta region. Forests are being cleared at an alarming rate to make way for oil drilling operations. This not only disrupts the local ecosystem but also affects the livelihoods of indigenous communities. The government has proposed a new policy aimed at reducing deforestation and promoting sustainable practices."

Summary: "The Niger Delta has been significantly affected by deforestation due to extensive oil drilling. This environmental degradation threatens local ecosystems and the livelihoods of indigenous people. In response, the government has introduced a policy to combat deforestation and encourage sustainable practices."

Practice Exercises

1.     Summarise the following news article: "The Federal Government has announced new measures to tackle the rise in unemployment rates among young Nigerians. The programme includes job training, skills development, and financial support for entrepreneurs."

2.     Summarise the opening chapter of a novel of your choice, focusing on the introduction of the main characters and setting.

3.     Summarise an opinion piece on a current issue, ensuring you capture the author's main arguments and perspectives.

Tips for Effective Summary Writing

  • Use your own words: Paraphrase the original text rather than copying it directly.
  • Focus on the essentials: Include only the main ideas and avoid minor details.
  • Keep it brief: Aim for a summary that is significantly shorter than the original text.
  • Check your understanding: Make sure you fully grasp the original text before summarising.

Summary writing is an essential skill that enhances comprehension and communication. By following these guidelines and practising regularly, you can develop the ability to summarise texts effectively, a valuable skill for academic and professional success.
