Common Nouns

Common nouns are words that name general items, rather than specific ones. They refer to a class or category of people, places, things, or ideas. Unlike proper nouns, which name specific entities and are always capitalised, common nouns are only capitalised at the beginning of a sentence.

Examples:

  • People: teacher, student, doctor, engineer
  • Places: city, village, school, market
  • Things: book, chair, computer, phone
  • Ideas: freedom, love, education, happiness

Common nouns can be classified into various types based on their characteristics. Understanding these types helps in using them correctly in different contexts.

  1. Countable Nouns:
    • Definition: Nouns that can be counted. They have both singular and plural forms.
    • Examples:
      • Singular: car, teacher, house
      • Plural: cars, teachers, houses
  2. Uncountable Nouns:
    • Definition: Nouns that cannot be counted and usually do not have a plural form.
    • Examples: water, information, rice
  3. Concrete Nouns:
    • Definition: Nouns that can be perceived through the five senses (sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing).
    • Examples: dog, apple, music
  4. Abstract Nouns:
    • Definition: Nouns that represent ideas, qualities, or states rather than physical objects.
    • Examples: bravery, love, intelligence
  5. Collective Nouns:
    • Definition: Nouns that refer to a group of individuals or things considered as a single entity.
