Summary Practice 11

Read the passage carefully and answer the questions on it.

Human rights are fundamental entitlements that belong to every individual by virtue of being human. These rights are designed to ensure that every person can live with dignity, freedom, and equality. Despite the universal recognition of human rights, violations remain a significant issue across the globe, affecting millions of people.

One major area of concern is the violation of rights related to freedom of expression. In many countries, individuals are not allowed to freely express their opinions or criticise the government without facing severe repercussions, such as imprisonment or harassment. This suppression of free speech undermines democratic principles and prevents the free exchange of ideas.

Another pressing issue is the lack of access to basic necessities such as education, healthcare, and clean water. In some regions, people are denied these essential services due to poverty, discrimination, or conflict. The absence of these basic rights can perpetuate cycles of inequality and hinder personal and societal development.

Efforts to address human rights violations involve both international and local initiatives. International organisations work to promote human rights through treaties, advocacy, and monitoring. On a local level, community groups and activists strive to raise awareness, support victims, and push for legal reforms to protect and uphold human rights.
